Our inspiration
Zoos of the past were designed to cage animals for entertainment. The zoos of today focus on conservation, preservation and education as the three main reasons for their continued existence. Throughout the world, wildlife and wildlife habitat is being decimated at an alarming rate. This decimation has caused the extinction or near extinction for many species, which makes captivity one of the last vestiges where wild animals can be preserved. Zoos provide viable protection for large numbers of species, many of which are considered less popular species than other more known animals. Zoos need to be viewed as more than entertainment. Modern zoos and their charges need an image upgrade. Our book contributes to this newer image by combining the photographic art and education aspects of Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) zoos.
One might then ask what makes this project different than the other zoo books already available? Our book is designed to show a less clinical approach to zoo photography by creating meaningful artistic photography contrasted against naturalistic photos too. This book will then leave this unique format in the hands of K-12 educators.
With such short attention spans, small children rarely venture beyond immediate satisfaction. Children see immediate beauty in certain popular animal species and rarely see it in others. We hear this frequently in phrases like 'that's ugly' or 'ewwww' when viewing captive animals. While this is the human child viewpoint, the animal isn't ugly to another member of the same species. Through stunning visual education about many different popular and unpopular animals, children can understand there is beauty in all-living creatures. When this type of learning is then combined with how a single child can make a difference, the child is motivated to conserve and protect animals they may not have of otherwise cared about.
We are undertaking this book project documenting the diverse captive animals in United States (US) Zoos as a mother and daughter team. Using photos and brief factoids we want to present the unique and varied species in zoos. The book will visually highlight the individual personalities that encompass zoo animals throughout US AZA institutions and ultimately be a book of great educational value.
As I sit in front of my computer trying to decide what best describes this project, my mind keeps coming back to one description: the personal and professional love/hate relationship people have with zoos. While animal captivity isn’t something to celebrate, AZA zoos are necessary so wild animals can be seen by future generations. Those same future generations must be taught at a young age of how and what conservation is about and the "why" of captivity. One can love the work AZA zoos perform. One can also love the animals for which that work is done while disliking the need for captivity to exist but exist it must. With this philosophy in mind, our book goals are:
1) To photographically highlight the animals in AZA institutions across the United States
2) Leave a lasting visual legacy for future generations to connect to captive animals
3) Show that any animal can be beautiful whether photographed naturalistic or as photo art
4) Contribute a positive image to captivity very much like current AZA zoos very existences contribute to saving the animals under their care
5) Visually and with factoids document the diverse, unique and varied species and personalities of animals in US AZA accredited zoos.
Your contribution to this project will enable us via zoo/travel photography and book publication to accomplish these goals. Show your love of animals and educating children about animal conservation by donating to this project TODAY!

The project details
We will spend up to 30 consecutive days each in 2014, 2015 and 2016 looping through the United States to at least 40 AZA accredited Zoos taking photos. Due to seasons and weather, the various trips must be conducted at different times of the year. This requires dividing the entire United States into three different (northern, middle and southern) regions and conquering the visits one region at a time.
A list of current AZA accredited zoos that we will be visiting can be found athttp://www.aza.org/current-accreditation-list/
We will shoot photos of animals big and small, fat and skinny, tall and short, inside buildings and outside in exhibits and of all shapes, sizes and colors. If the viewer didn't already know the animals are in a captive environment, most of the photos of captive animals cannot be distinguished apart from photos of the same animals living in the wild. Some existing project photos, along with Amy’s digital portfolio can be found onportfolio.busybeearts.com and Allison’s digital portfolio can be found atwww.aliceannys.com
A coffee table book of up to 100 pages will be published with high quality photographs with the focus on threatened, endangered and critically endangered animals. The book is to be completed and delivered to applicable donors by December 31, 2016.
About the photographers
Allison (mother) and Amy (adult daughter) can be described as the mother who is a computer person but a so-so photographer and the fantastic photographer and K-12 educator daughter who prefers to get great photos in camera rather than use a computer later to enhance photos.
Allison volunteers at a senior center teaching "When Photography and Computers Collide" and Amy calls her a “tinkerer” because she likes to digitally post process a lot of photos in a lot of different ways. Allison is also proud to be known in certain zoo environments as “Amy’s Mom”.
Amy is a Woodland Park Zoo education department alum and currently works at an AZA accredited location. She is a certified K-12 educator and loves teaching children about animals and nature. She is also a part-time professional photography tutor and a very skilled stained glass creator. Amy is a multifaceted artist.
The two have combined talents to create this project that is dear to their hearts. Additional details about Amy and links to samples of her various arts can be found at www.busybeearts.com and additional details about Allison can be found on her websitewww.aliceannys.com
