Sunny Sandhu hasn't added a story.

English Version (en Francaise en bas)

My name is Dr Sunny Sandhu. I am a medical doctor, musician, music therapist and environmentalist. Since 2011, I have been working for the conservation of River Dolphins in the Beas River in Punjab.

For many years I have been taking schools, artists and people from all walks of life to the river to see the dolphins and celebrate biodiversity through music. This is my way of giving back to the source of all life – our sacred rivers.

Punjab, my home state, has suffered severe environmental damage. Bringing people back to the rivers and reconnecting them with nature is a powerful step toward restoring that relationship.

I have been living in France since 2014, but every year I return to Punjab to organise activities for environmental conservation and protection of river dolphins.

Bhoomitra  Beda Yatra

Bhoomitra Beda Yatra (boat journey) grew out of this work. Bhoomitra means Friends of the Earth.

We work with local boatmen to encourage ecotourism, cultural exchange, research and environmental education. We also organise art and music gatherings in the middle of the river, helping keep the ancient boat traditions alive.

Artists such as Sharada Mushti , Kumbakonam Swaminathan , Rabbi Shergill, Niccolo Vacchi, Claire Nicolet and the Mandiar Brothers have joined our events and shared their music with us .

New in 2026 – Rudra veena made it to Beda Yatra and a 100 km Beas River Walk

One of the most memorable moments of the 2026 Beda Yatra was the live classical music performance in the middle of the river.

Renowned Rudra Veena artist Sharada Mushti performed on the boat in the middle of the river, accompanied by Kumbakonam Gopi on the Mridangam.

The deep meditative sound of the Rudra Veena flowing across the water created a powerful experience, reconnecting music with the natural rhythm of the river. This moment beautifully expressed the ancient relationship between Indian classical music, spirituality, and sacred rivers.

These artistic gatherings on the river are at the heart of Bhoomitra Beda Yatra, bringing together music, ecology and community to inspire protection of rivers and species like the river dolphins of the Beas.

This year we added an important new component:
a river walk along the Beas River, carried out with Bageshwar Singh from Pahal NGO.

The walk documented:

  • river ecology. We met the last 2 dolphins , the ghariyals , turtles , thousands of birds . We walked through beautiful forests along the river like ghaggrewal . We documented the damage caused by floods of 2025 .

  • river communities , new sites for more river festivals.

  • traditional boat culture

  • environmental challenges of sand mining and river pollution

Our goal: completing the film

We are currently making a documentary film about the Beda Yatra festival and the river walk along the Beas.

The film will highlight:

  • the Beas river walk

  • the Beda Yatra festival

  • river culture and traditions

  • river dolphin conservation

We now need support to complete the film and bring the story to international audiences, opening new conversations about river dolphin conservation.

Your support will help us:

  • finish the documentary film

  • share it at film festivals and environmental events

  • expand educational activities around rivers

  • support local boat communities

Why this matters

Our partners in Punjab are engaged in a serious battle to stop pollution in the Satluj River. Although legal victories have been achieved, pollution continues on the ground. As a result, river dolphin habitat remains largely limited to the Beas River.

Reconnecting people to rivers is essential.

People protect what they love.

Other projects

We are also working on a children’s book about river dolphins titled “Bulanaji”, with Chilean illustrator Esteban Peña ,writer Federica Fratagnoli and designer Alexandra Picard .

We manage a WhatsApp network of 140 members including NGOs, social activists, wildlife rescue teams and boatmen across Punjab, encouraging collaboration for conservation.

Partners

  • Public Action Committee – Mattewara , Sahil e Beas - Shri Hargobindpur , Dariya e Beas - River rewilding project

  • Pahal NGO – Jalandhar

  • Eklore – Association in Vence, France

Please support our work and share this campaign with friends and family.

  • Public Action Committee – Mattewara , Sahil e Beas - Shri Hargobindpur Sahib , Dariya e Beas - Rewilding Project

  • Pahal NGO – Jalandhar

  • Eklore – Association à Vence, France
