Give Black Day is an annual fundraiser organized by the Black Giving Fund.
We are raising funds that will go directly to Black Liberationists, as well as stimulate the solidarity economy.
Each year, we highlight Black Liberationists who are all connected by a central, notable theme.
For 2020 we recognize THE MOVEMENT and these Four Black Liberationists who organized to abolish police and prisons, meet the needs of Black people through COVID relief and mutual aid, and strengthened reproductive and spiritual justice as the threats to the Black physical and emotional body and mind lurk.
Learn more about these Black Liberationists we're uplifting
- Amani Sawari: (Prison and Police Abolition) Detroit, MI: Amani Sawari is a writer, founder of SawariMedia LLC and spokesperson for Jailhouse Lawyer Speak's National Prison Strike and current coordinator for the Nationwide Right2Vote Campaign. Her visionary publications, including the National Right2Vote Report, aid in distributing updates within the prison resistance movement and building community among participants in the prison resistance movement on both sides of the wall across 30 states.
- Hess Love: (Reproductive and Spiritual Justice) Baltimore, MD : Hess is a cultural worker, family advocate, and spiritual activist based out of Baltimore. They also write on intimate politics and Black spirituality.
- ML Smith (Police and Prison Abolition) St. Louis, MO: A justice-impacted Black woman and a Formerly Incarcerated Professional. Her advocacy and activism includes lobbying for reentry services, educational opportunities to those still incarcerated and released, and compassionate release for incarcerated individuals due to Covid. She advocates for de-carceration, humane prison treatment, abolition of the death penalty, and for the wrongfully convicted.
- Zellie Imani: (COVID Response and Mutual Aid) Paterson, NJ: Zellie Imani is a writer, educator and organizer. Most recently, Zellie has been organizing against anti-Black state violence with Black Lives Matter Paterson. He is also a co-founder of the Black Liberation Collective, a Black youth Collective dedicated to transforming higher education through unity, coalition building, direct action and political education.
The Black Giving Fund embraces transparency and accountability because we know direct giving is a relatively unexplored terrain in mass giving.
We're powered by grassroots donors, and as we normalize direct giving as an instrument of Black Liberation, we will maintain levels of transparency that do not reinforce the notoriously heavy and anti-Black scrutiny that underscores philanthropy.
Here's how funds raised will be used
-
Tier 1:The first $3,000 raised will be
given to the Four Black Liberationists featured above ($750 each).
- Note that BGF has already secured $500 for each of them in recognition of their work, and we hope to secure a total of $1,250 each
- Tier 2: The next $2,000 raised will support BGF's Let Us Be initiative that provides 3 - 5 Black Liberationists $500 each month
- Tier 3:The next $1,500 raised will be donated to three direct giving organizations and collectives that are led by Black women and nonbinary people, to stimulate the solidarity economy and further normalize direct giving
Monies raised above these tiers will support the general operating of the Black Giving Fund.
The Black Giving Fund is a grassroots radical collective that provides direct monetary funds to Black organizers, activists, and change-makers who are guided by Liberationist thought, action, and imagination. We're guided by the following principles
- Self Determination: We believe that Black people are the best stewards of our funds, and should we have the financial resources, then we're able to better embark on Liberationist public works
- Cooperative Economics: Black people thrive best under a system of mutual giving and circulating resources intra-communally
- Reparative Justice: Descendants of chattel-based enslavement are owed money from the vicious theft of our labor, with no conditions or contigencies.
